As long as I can remember, I've wanted
to play the piano. I was fascinated by the emotions I could hear in the
different sounds. So after high school I bought a used Kimball console
and took lessons for two years.
From the beginning I was hooked.
I found such intense pleasure in sitting at my piano and letting my
emotions flow through my fingertips. I never really tried to compose anything,
I would just play sounds to match the words in my heart.
I wrote what I consider my first song when
my grandmother died. An instrumental that after I performed it for my piano
teacher, she commented it was "too pretty". That was when I first thought
about actually becoming a songwriter.
In my mid-thirties I became a closet poet
and made numerous attempts to put words and music together.
I was definitely floundering, until I placed myself in the hands of some
great instructors at Nashville State Community College.
Although I still struggle everyday with songwriting, I no longer wonder
why God put me on this planet. Now, I know.
I've always loved all types of music from Mozart to Glen Miller to Metallica
and everything in between. I think some of the most beautiful melodies ever
written occur in the rock/metal genre of music. Each piece of music is a different
shade on the emotional palette. The sensation of feeling them is what I find inspiring.
